Day 2 of Vacation - Pelican's Landing Dinner, Fort Lauderdale

For our Day 2 dinner in Fort Lauderdale we were hoping to try something near our Hotel, firing up the trusty iPhone the Urban Spoon app plotted a number of locations near us, with Pelican Landing having an 89% approval rating.  Our first foray into Pelican’s Landing after getting off at stop 6 of the Fort Lauderdale Water Taxi we were greeted with a full restaurant even the bar was full.  We decided to go back to the hotel first to change into warmer clothes before trying again.

As you can see the restaurant itself is not very large, it is listed as being one of Fort Lauderdale’s hidden gems of 2009 and was recently reviewed by Zagat.  According to Urban Spoon the Pelican burger was award winning.

 Shot of the menu

We decided on ordering the ½ dozen oysters and the crab cakes as our starters and went with the skirt steak and the Pelican burger as our mains.

As I am not an oyster person Helen reports the oysters were really sweet and no sauce was required (she also mentions that a lot of places mask the freshness or lack thereof of oysters by drenching them in sauce. Helen says they were tiny. 90/100

The crab cakes were moist with crunch on the outside, and the big pieces of bacon … (mmm… bacon) anyways quite tasty and I enjoyed the arugula side salad as it had a sweet dressing that balanced the pepper of the arugula. 85/100

The skirt steak is a tougher cut of meat but was cooked medium rare as ordered; it was well seasoned with a spicy seasoning. Again it had the wonderful arugula side salad and some steak potatoes. It was a last minute choice as Helen had ordered the Pelican Burger. 70/100

The Pelican Burger is a beef patty cooked to your liking (Medium Well in this case) topped with short rib served with a side of steak fries which were themselves very crunchy on the outside yet moist on the inside.   The burger was cooked properly and the short rib was extremely juicy yet tasty. 79/100

Check out the view from the restaurant ! All in all we would definitely go back to Pelican’s Landing again if we were in the area, however due to their location on the marina unless we were on the water taxi or staying at the Hyatt Regency Pier 66 it would be very difficult to visit there again.
